The Wreck of the Delaware

Many, many years ago there was a boat, crew and a captain. The captain’s name was Baldwin. One day there was a storm and Captain was in the boat, yes, his crew too. Huria hurried with her companion to the boat. Henry Squirrell, a man on the boat said to the captain, “I will swim to the shore with a rope on my tummy.”

“OK,” said Captain Baldwin and Henry jumped into the sea. When he jumped into the water, he instantly crashed into the rocks. The crew pulled him out of the water.

Huria and her companion smashed into the water to get all of the crew. When all of the crew were on shore, then Captain Baldwin tried to swim to shore. Huria saw Captain Baldwin. Huria knew that he wouldn’t make it. Finally Huria went and got him. After that they saw Henry Squirrell saying, “Help,” but the rope was broken. A few minutes later he drowned.

From that day on Huria was a legend.

How the Kiwi Lost its Wings.

Once upon a time, about one thousand years ago, the kiwi was in the tree tops because the kiwi could fly as fast as the other birds.
One day there was a plague of insects and Tane Mahuta said to all of the birds, “Which of you will live on the forest floor? He asked Cuckoo and she said, “No Sorry.” He asked Morepork and he said no too. “Sorry.” He asked Tui. She said, “No. Sorry.” Finally he asked Pukeko. He said, “No, I cannot do that.” After that he asked Kiwi and he said, “Yes.” “Are you sure that you want to lose your colourful wings?” “Yes.” “Are you going to live on the ground?” “Yes.”
Tui got a white feather. Pukeko got to live on the swampy lands. Cuckoo had to steal other birds’ nests. Morepork lives in the darkness. Kiwi lived on the floor. That’s how Kiwi lost its wings.
